Syria Condemns Netanyahu's 'Provocative' Visit to Occupied Mount Hermon
(MENAFN) Syria on Wednesday sharply condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's entry into occupied Syrian territory, branding the move a "provocative" breach of the country's sovereignty and international law.
Netanyahu toured the Israeli-occupied stretch of Mount Hermon earlier in the day, accompanied by Defense Minister Israel Katz.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry denounced what it termed Netanyahu's "illegal entry," saying it amounted to a "flagrant violation" of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The ministry cautioned that repeated Israeli incursions and strikes inside Syria signal a dangerous escalation that endangers regional security and stability.
Damascus placed responsibility for any fallout squarely on Israel and urged the United Nations, international bodies and influential world powers to intervene, halt the attacks, and push for a return to the terms of the 1974 disengagement agreement.
During his visit, Netanyahu asserted that Israel had achieved unprecedented "absolute control" over the corridor stretching from Mount Hermon to the Yarmouk River. He further stated that Israel would not permit what he called "terrorist forces" to gain a foothold near its borders.
Katz, for his part, indicated Israel has no intention of relinquishing the territory. "We are here on Mount Hermon, and we will not move from here," he said in a separately released video.
Israel has occupied Syria's Golan Heights since 1967 and unilaterally annexed the territory in 1981 — a move the international community has never recognized. Israeli forces have also pushed further into Syrian territory amid recent regional upheaval.
