Canada Breaks Ground on Nation's Largest Carbon Capture Hub
(MENAFN) Canada advanced its push toward net-zero emissions Wednesday as construction officially began on what is set to become the country's largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.
The federal government and the province of Alberta, in partnership with Enhance Energy, broke ground on the Origins carbon capture and storage hub near Clive, Alberta — a facility expected to become the nation's biggest of its kind.
According to a statement from Natural Resources Canada, the hub is slated to come online in January 2027, initially storing up to 1.5 million tons of CO2 each year — an amount equivalent to taking more than 500,000 cars off the road annually. Officials said capacity could grow further over time.
The facility will tie into Alberta's existing CO2 transportation infrastructure and, in its early phase, serve industrial operations in the province's Industrial Heartland, supporting sectors such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, cement and power generation, the statement noted.
The project expands on Enhance Energy's existing carbon capture operation in Clive, which the company says has stored more than 9 million tons of CO2 since 2020 and generated upward of $600 million in economic activity.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said the initiative reflects federal-provincial cooperation, noting it shows how "the federal and provincial governments and industry are working together as one Team Canada to build big things in this country again and to make sure every Canadian benefits from a stronger, cleaner, more competitive economy."
Alberta Minister of Energy and Minerals Brian Jean said the hub "will help ensure Alberta produces the most responsible oil and gas in the world while creating investment and jobs in rural Alberta."
Enhance Energy Vice President Candice Paton said the project underscores that "CCS is a right-now technology" capable of delivering both economic growth and emissions reduction.
