Israeli Artillery Strikes Village in Syria's Quneitra Province
(MENAFN) Israeli forces shelled the outskirts of the village of Tarnaja in southwestern Syria's Quneitra governorate on Wednesday, according to Syrian state media.
Syria's state-run media reported that the Israeli army struck the village with artillery fire. The channel did not immediately report casualties or damage resulting from the attack.
The shelling followed an incident a day earlier in which Israeli forces entered the village of Bariqa in the Quneitra countryside, raiding and searching a home, Alikhbariah reported.
Quneitra has faced a wave of Israeli incursions and shelling in recent days. On Sunday, Israeli forces fired an artillery shell near the village of Samadaniyah, and the day before that, six shells struck the outskirts of the town of Rafid. An Israeli unit of five military vehicles also entered the area around the town before withdrawing without making arrests.
Southern Syria — particularly the Quneitra and Daraa governorates — has experienced near-daily Israeli raids, searches, arrests and the setup of military checkpoints in recent weeks.
Israel has controlled most of Syria's Golan Heights since 1967. Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime on Dec. 8, 2024, Israel declared the 1974 Disengagement Agreement void and moved to occupy the Syrian buffer zone along with other positions, including the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.
On July 26, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said his government was working, with support from other countries, toward a security agreement with Israel. He said a successful deal would "pave the way for comprehensive peace without relinquishing Syria's right to the occupied Golan."
