China Rejects US 'False' AI Theft Claims, Urges Cooperation
(MENAFN) Beijing pushed back Wednesday against Washington's accusation that Chinese AI firms are siphoning capabilities from American AI systems, demanding the United States halt what it called "false allegations."
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning argued that China's AI progress stems from its own scientific and technological self-reliance, driven by a national approach centered on broad consultation, shared contribution, mutual benefit and openness to international cooperation.
Mao said Beijing wants AI development worldwide to remain open, inclusive and oriented toward benefiting humanity as a whole.
She called on Washington to honor the understandings reached between the two countries' presidents and to abandon what she described as baseless accusations aimed at discrediting China.
"As two major powers in AI, China and the U.S. should step up cooperation," she added.
The rebuke follows a warning issued Tuesday by the US Cyber Defense Agency, which said China-based AI firms are engaged in the systematic extraction of proprietary capabilities from leading American AI models. According to the agency, large-scale knowledge distillation has become a central pillar of these companies' development strategy — not a mere "supplement" to it.
The agency named DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun and Z.AI, alleging that since at least late 2024 they have pulled billions of tokens from millions of exchanges with top-tier US models — including Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok — "likely with Chinese government awareness."
