Justice Bhati Sworn In As Chief Justice Of J&K & Ladakh


(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Dr. Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati was sworn in on Wednesday as the 39th Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh at a solemn ceremony held at SKUAST, Srinagar.

The oath of office was administered by Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh with additional charge of Jammu & Kashmir.

The proceedings were conducted by Shashanka Ala, Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, while the Warrant of Appointment of the Chief Justice was read out by M K Sharma, Registrar General of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh.

The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Judges of the High Court and their spouses, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, advisors to the chief minister, the chairperson of the J&K Waqf Board, the state election commissioner, former Chief Justices and Judges, and senior officers from the civil and police administration.

A large number of sitting and former Chief Justices and Judges from various High Courts across the country, particularly Rajasthan, besides Delhi, Punjab and Haryana and Allahabad, also attended the ceremony.

The presence of Justice Nupur Bhati of the Rajasthan High Court, wife of the newly appointed Chief Justice, along with his parents, relatives and other family members, added significance to the occasion.

Senior government officials, including the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of J&K, Commissioners and Secretaries of the two UT administrations, Vice-Chancellors of universities, members of the Central Administrative Tribunal, representatives of various Bar associations, Law Officers, Judicial Officers and officers of the High Court Registry were also present.

The Ministry of Law and Justice had issued the notification appointing Justice Bhati as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on September 5.

Born on September 21, 1970, Justice Bhati enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and practised primarily before the Rajasthan High Court at Jodhpur. During his career at the Bar, he handled matters relating to constitutional and writ jurisdiction, service law, public interest litigation, elections, revenue, mining, education, Panchayati Raj, family and criminal law.

He was elevated as a Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on November 16, 2016.

Before his elevation, Justice Bhati served as Additional Advocate General for Rajasthan and was also elected as a member of the Bar Council of Rajasthan for the 2009-2015 term. He served as President of the Rajasthan High Court Lawyers' Association from 2011 to 2013 and as General Secretary of the Rajasthan High Court Advocates' Association in 2001.

Justice Bhati holds degrees in B.A., LL.B. and LL.M. in Mercantile Law, besides a Ph.D. He also served as visiting faculty at Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, for 19 years and at the National Law University, Jodhpur.
