Interpreters Unlimited Recognized Among San Diego's 2026 Companies That Care
Interpreters Unlimited (IU), a San Diego based Language Solutions Integrator (LSI) providing interpretation and translation services nationwide, has been named to the San Diego Business Journal's 2026 Companies That Care list, recognizing the company's longstanding commitment to making a positive impact both through its work and beyond it.
For more than 55 years, Interpreters Unlimited has helped people overcome language and communication barriers. Every day, the company's network of more than 10,000 linguists helps Limited English Proficient, Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals communicate with healthcare providers, schools, government agencies, legal professionals, businesses and other organizations providing essential services.
That mission is also reflected in a company culture built around giving back.“We are fortunate to do work every day that can make a real difference in someone's life, but we have always believed our responsibility to the communities we serve goes beyond the services we provide,” said Shamus Sayed, IU CEO.“Being recognized as a Company That Cares is especially meaningful because giving back has always been an important part of who we are.”
One of IU's largest philanthropic initiatives has been its partnership with NORAD Tracks Santa. In 2025, the company expanded pro bono live interpreter access for the program from eight languages to more than 200 through its virtual interpretation platform. The expanded language access helped make the annual tradition more accessible to families around the world, regardless of the language they speak.
Closer to home, IU supports PATH San Diego, whose programs provide housing assistance, outreach and other essential resources to individuals experiencing homelessness. PATH San Diego reported helping nearly 8,000 San Diegans access critical resources in 2025, including helping more than 1,000 people secure housing.
IU also gives 2% of the revenue from most contracts back to local charities, extending the impact of its business into the communities where its services are provided. They have supported or worked with organizations including the San Diego Food Bank, Ronald McDonald House, Alzheimer's & Dementia Resource Center, Endangered Species International, Survivors of Torture International, AYA Access Youth Academy, Junior Achievement of San Diego County, the Muslim Community Center of Greater San Diego and the FBI Citizens Academy of San Diego.
The company's commitment extends directly to its employees through a Paid Time Off Volunteer Program, established by IU President Sayed Ali, which provides every IU employee with three additional paid days off each year to volunteer for causes of their choice. Employees have used that time to give back in a variety of ways, including planting trees in wildfire damaged areas and participating in local neighborhood and beach cleanups.
For IU, being a Company That Cares is closely tied to the reason the company exists in the first place. Language access can determine whether a patient understands a doctor, a parent can participate in their child's education, a Deaf individual can communicate with an organization, or a newly arrived family can understand important documents and services. IU's interpreters and translators help make those interactions possible in more than 200 languages every day.
“Caring about the community and providing language access really come from the same place,” IU President Sayed Ali added.“Both are about making sure people have access to the resources, opportunities and support they need. We are proud of what our team does, and we are honored to be included among San Diego companies that share that commitment.”
