Morven Exhibition Highlights Black Women Printmakers

(MENAFN- USA Art News) A new exhibition,“Voices in Print,” showcasing the work of 14 Black women printmakers with ties to New Jersey, has opened at Morven's Stockton Education Center. Curated by Judith K. Brodsky and Rhinold L. Ponder, it is the inaugural exhibition for the center.

The exhibition is part of“Re-Visioning America: 1776–2026,” a series of programs marking the United States' 250th anniversary by highlighting the nation's diversity and the contributions of female artists of color.“Re-Visioning America” draws inspiration from the Princeton University Art Museum's 1976 bicentennial exhibition,“Fragments of American Life,” which was the institution's first to feature Black artists but included only one Black woman.

“Voices in Print” celebrates generations of Black women artist-activists whose work advocates for visibility and social change. Many of these artists collaborated to develop new printmaking techniques and create opportunities within the art world, serving as mentors and influences. Their art centers authentic representations of the Black female body, reflecting their experiences, identities, confidence, strength, beauty, and ideas.

The featured artists include Emma Amos, Camille Billops, Vivian E. Browne, Nanette Carter, Nefertiti Goodman, Gladys Barker Grauer, Diane Victoria Horn, Carmen Cartiness Johnson, Nell Painter, Sondra Perry, Janet Taylor Pickett, Mickalene Thomas, Nette Forné Thomas, and Bisa Washington. All have a connection to New Jersey's cultural heritage, which the museum aims to celebrate.

This project is a collaboration involving Art Against Racism, the Arts Council of Princeton, Garden Theatre, the Historical Society of Princeton, Princeton Public Library, Princeton University Art Museum, the Princeton University Humanities Initiative, and the William Trent House Museum. Funding for the exhibition was provided by the New Jersey Historic Trust and the Mercer County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

“Voices in Print” is on view at Morven, located at 55 Stockton Street, Princeton, NJ, through February 28, 2027. Further visit information is available at morven.
