Basel Social Club To Launch Tokyo Jazz Club In November

(MENAFN- USA Art News) The Basel Social Club, an organization known for its alternative programming during Art Basel week in Switzerland since 2022, is expanding with a new Japanese edition for Art Week Tokyo in November. Named the Tokyo Jazz Club, the initiative will take place from November 1-8 in an eight-story former capsule hotel located in Tokyo's bookshop-rich Jimbocho district.

According to the Italian publication Artribune, the Tokyo Jazz Club aims to connect visual arts, jazz and music generally, gastronomy, dining, leisure, and nightlife.“Inspired by the cross-pollination of fields and attitudes that marked the creation of Basel Social Club, Tokyo Jazz Club seems to seek to bring together visual arts, jazz and music in general, gastronomy and dining, leisure and nightlife.... It aims to offer a new platform alternative to the more traditional routes of the art system, bringing together artists, galleries, performers, and musicians under the same roof, with a particular focus on conviviality through a curated food and drink offering,” Artribune reported.

A brief post on the Basel Social Club's Instagram account promotes the event with keywords like“Art. Performance. Music. Gathering. Improvisation. Listening. Collective presence.” A video accompanying the announcement shows quickly edited clips of jazz clubs, video games, eating, drinking, and dancing.

Robbie Fitzpatrick, cofounder of Basel Social Club, told Artribune,“Tokyo is the natural choice for the continued evolution of the ideas we have developed through Basel Social Club. The city maintains an extraordinary tension between tradition and experimentation, from its long musical history, its rituals, and its exceptional craftsmanship to its ability to embrace the most original and unconventional forms of expression.”

Fellow cofounder Yael Salomonowitz stated that the Tokyo Jazz Club was conceived to“explore the space between performance and spectatorship. Rather than separating exhibition and performance, we want to create an environment where they coexist as part of the same shared world. And jazz offers us a way of thinking, a language of improvisation, listening, and collective presence.”
