Karla Wong's Folkloric Portraits On View At Chicago's Intuit Art Museum

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Mexican artist Karla Wong, known for her vibrant folkloric portraits, is presenting a new body of work titled Journeys of Being at Chicago's Intuit Art Museum. The exhibition showcases pieces that blend Wong's Oaxacan heritage with her Chinese background and experiences as a trans woman living between the United States and Mexico. The show is on view through January 10.

Wong's current artistic practice is deeply informed by her earlier career as a forensic and witness sketch artist for the local justice department in Oaxaca, where she spent her adolescent and early adult years and attended university. This experience of imagining a figure's likeness from a description continues to influence her imaginative process.

The exhibition features portraits with skeletal figures reminiscent of Day of the Dead, traditional alebrijes folk art sculptures, and a desert landscape dotted with agave plants. Victorian attire and stylized makeup in her depictions hint at the performance of gender and societal expressions of beauty and self-expression. Works on display include“The Chineses from Laollaga, Oaxaca (Las chinas de Laollaga)” ( 2024 ), an oil on canvas measuring 36 x 48 inches. Other oil on canvas pieces from 2026 include“Arriving to the Land of the Mezcal (Llegando a la tierra del mezcal)” ( 48 x 48 inches ),“You Born to be Free (Naciste para ser libre)” ( 60 x 36 inches ),“Our Brief Passage Through Life (Nuestro breve paso por la vida)” ( 48 x 36 inches ), and“The Secret (El secreto)” ( 60 x 48 inches ).

Surrealism and the uncanny are key inspirations for Wong, with mysterious clouds and small openings in her paintings often appearing as portals to other realms. Her works, such as“Our Brief Passage Through Life (Nuestro breve paso por la vida),” share stylistic similarities with the alchemical art of Spanish artist Remedios Varo, who often depicted figures with unusual proportions. Wong's distinctive style is marked by her use of scale and the unexpected pairing of objects and motifs, moving beyond the literal representations of her sketch artist days to create a unique envisioned world.
