Nicaragua Accuses Germany Over Arms Supplies To Israel

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) "> KABUL (Pajhwok): Nicaragua has accused Germany of violating the Genocide Convention and international law by supplying arms and military support to Israel, allegations Berlin has rejected.

The Associated Press reported that Nicaragua raised the allegations during hearings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

Nicaragua argued that by providing weapons and other military support to Israel, Germany had facilitated actions in Gaza that could amount to genocide.

Germany has rejected the allegations, the report said.

Although the case is against Germany, the proceedings also indirectly challenge Israel's military operations in Gaza.

The current hearings are preliminary, with the court considering whether it has jurisdiction to hear the case, according to the report.

Carlos José Argüello Gómez, Nicaragua's lead counsel, told the court that given Germany's political, trade and military ties with Israel, Berlin should have been aware of the serious risk of acts that could constitute genocide.

Germany has been a major supporter of Israel for decades and is considered its second-largest arms supplier after the United States, the report said.

The case is among the latest legal proceedings related to the Gaza war before the International Court of Justice. South Africa previously accused Israel of committing genocide before the same court.
