Afd Election Victory In Saxony-Anhalt Warning, Not Turning Point For Germany Expert

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Pavel Havlíček, a research fellow at the Association for International Affairs (Prague), said this in a comment to Ukrinform.

The expert urged against talking about“catastrophic scenarios” for Germany and called for taking into account the specific circumstances of the country's eastern regions.

“The strong performance of populist and far-right forces is linked to local problems, including depopulation, economic difficulties, and demographic challenges,” Havlíček said.

He added that this was a warning sign for the central government and major political parties, particularly the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), whose support has seen a noticeable decline.

“However, Germany's parliamentary system remains considerably more stable. The main area of risk at present is the regional (state-level) jurisdiction over the media, education, and security services, where regional authorities have significant influence,” the analyst explained.

As reported, elections to the state parliament (Landtag) were held in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6. The far-right AfD won 44.4% of the vote, securing 39 of the 83 seats and significantly outperforming the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which lost substantial support and received 17.2%.

Despite its victory, the AfD failed to secure the absolute majority needed to form a government on its own.
