John Hayes

John Hayes is an Associate Professor of History at Augusta University. His research and teaching explore the complex dynamics of religion and race in the U.S. South. He is the author of Hard, Hard Religion: Interracial Faith in the Poor South (UNC Press, 2017) and of "Towards the 'Larger Things:' Flannery O'Connor's Late Stories and the Crisis of Southern Identity" in the edited collection Reckoning with Racism in Flannery O'Connor (UGA Press, forthcoming). His work has appeared in The Bitter Southerner, Black Perspectives, and Study the South.
