(MENAFN- MENAFNEditorial) Ben Shelton defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set US Open quarterfinal thriller, setting up an all-American semifinal against Frances Tiafoe as the tournament enters its closing stages in New York.
Shelton recovered after losing a tight opening set to defeat Alcaraz 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7), ending the Spaniard’s title defence and 18-match Grand Slam winning streak. The result sends Shelton into his second US Open semifinal, following his run to the last four in 2023.
He will next face Tiafoe in an all-American semifinal, guaranteeing the United States a place in the men’s final as the country continues its pursuit of a first men’s Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003.
Tiafoe completed a remarkable comeback of his own against Alex Michelsen, recovering from two sets down to win 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(10-6). Michelsen served for the match at 5-4 in the third set before Tiafoe broke back and turned the contest around to reach his third US Open semifinal.
The remaining men’s quarterfinals will see top seed Alexander Zverev face Botic van de Zandschulp, while Karen Khachanov takes on 21-year-old Alexander Blockx, the first Belgian man to reach a US Open singles quarterfinal.
In the women’s draw, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka kept her bid for a third consecutive title alive with a three-set victory over Linda Noskova. She will meet Jessica Pegula, who came from behind to defeat Emma Navarro.
Wednesday’s remaining women’s quarterfinals will see qualifier Zheng Qinwen face Elena Rybakina. Zheng has produced one of the tournament’s standout runs, becoming the first qualifier since Emma Raducanu in 2021 to reach the US Open women’s quarterfinals after defeating Iga Swiatek. Rybakina enters the match having yet to drop a set and will become world No. 1 for the first time if she wins the quarterfinal.
Coco Gauff will also face reigning Roland Garros champion Mirra Andreeva for a place in the semifinals. Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, reached the last eight with a straight-sets victory over fellow American Iva Jovic, while Andreeva came from a set down to defeat Anastasia Potapova.
