Belgium's PISA Scores Show Deepening Learning Crisis
(MENAFN) Belgian teenagers are falling further behind in reading, mathematics and science, fresh data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) showed Tuesday, adding the country to a broader pattern of eroding academic performance.
The latest results point to a steady slide in student achievement — most pronounced in reading and math — while exposing sharp gaps both between Belgium's language communities and along socioeconomic lines.
In Flanders, the shift has been stark: as recently as 2013, the region counted more high-achieving math students than low-achieving ones. That balance has since flipped entirely. Today, roughly one in four Flemish students fails to clear even the basic proficiency bar in mathematics.
The numbers across subjects paint a consistent picture of decline. In Flanders, 29.4% of students missed the baseline mark in reading comprehension, while 25.6% fell short in mathematics and 22.6% in science.
Socioeconomic status remains a powerful predictor of outcomes. Nearly one in three Flemish students from disadvantaged backgrounds landed in the low-achiever category — roughly triple the rate among students from wealthier households, where only about one in 10 fell into that group.
Belgium's French-speaking community, meanwhile, posted results roughly in line with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) average across reading, mathematics and science — though still well behind Flanders' figures.
Both regions have seen scores erode over the past decade and a half. Flanders continues to place among the world's top 20 education systems, but the French-speaking community trails roughly 10 spots further down the rankings.
