London Mayor Backs UK's West Bank Settlement Trade Ban
(MENAFN) London Mayor Sadiq Khan voiced support Tuesday for the British government's newly announced ban on trade in goods from illegal West Bank settlements, describing the settlements themselves as a "significant obstacle" standing in the way of peace.
Writing on X, the U.S.-based social media platform, Khan said: "It's never been clearer: illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land are a significant obstacle to peace."
He argued that a genuine two-state solution is impossible unless a viable Palestinian state remains achievable on the ground.
"That's why the UK Government is right to take strong action and impose a ban on trade in goods from these settlements," Khan noted.
The mayor also pointed to mounting international pressure on Israel to recognize and uphold Palestinian rights, noting that settlers are inflicting "terrible violence" on Palestinians daily.
Khan's comments followed remarks earlier Tuesday from UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who told Parliament the announcement marked the "beginning of a new approach" toward Israel as the government moves to bar imports of goods produced in illegal settlements.
