BSW Candidate Sets "Anti-Zionist" Condition for Saxony-Anhalt Premier
(MENAFN) The top candidate of the left-wing Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) in Saxony-Anhalt has declared that anyone backing "any Zionist projects" is unfit to become the eastern German state's next premier.
Claudia Wittig, in comments to Compact media, indicated the BSW remains open to negotiations with other parties represented in the Magdeburg state parliament — including the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) — while pushing for a nonpartisan premier committed to a peace-oriented agenda.
"Our clear red line is that the new premier must be someone who pursues a policy of peace. And that rules out anyone who supports any kind of Zionist project," Wittig said. She further took aim at rising defense budgets and weapons manufacturing investment, arguing such spending fuels further conflict rather than preventing it.
German outlets have tied Wittig's comments to her campaign opposition to a proposed factory by Israeli defense manufacturer Elbit Systems in Sangerhausen, located in the Mansfeld-Südharz district — a project the BSW has strongly opposed.
The statement follows Saturday's Sept. 6 state election, in which the AfD captured 43.8% of the vote, securing 39 of the 83 seats in the Magdeburg legislature — three seats shy of the 42 required for an outright majority.
Every major party besides the BSW has ruled out any formal coalition or cooperative arrangement with the AfD. Saxony-Anhalt's domestic intelligence agency has formally classified the state's AfD branch as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization, citing elements within the party that promote a racially and ethnically defined notion of national identity at odds with Germany's democratic constitutional framework.
While the BSW has signaled willingness to engage with the AfD, it has explicitly rejected backing a government headed by AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund, instead pressing for a change in government and an independent, cross-party premier.
"We are not entering coalition negotiations; we are talking about projects," Wittig said Tuesday, adding that the BSW intends to engage all parties on the policy priorities it wants reflected for Saxony-Anhalt.
