Iran Claims Retaliatory Strikes on U.S. Bases in Jordan

(MENAFN) Iran issued a sharp rebuke of the United States on Wednesday, accusing Washington of striking multiple Iranian commercial vessels and declaring that its armed forces had retaliated by hitting American military installations in Jordan along with several U.S. ships.

Tehran's Foreign Ministry characterized the assault on Iranian tankers in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman as part of a broader pattern, branding it a continuation of what it called "military aggression, maritime blockade and economic war" waged by the United States.

According to the ministry, the strikes amounted to a "clear violation" of the UN Charter and international law. Officials warned the attacks were fueling regional instability and putting both regional and global peace at risk.

Tehran framed its own response as defensive. The ministry said Iranian forces invoked their "inherent right to legitimate self-defense" in striking U.S. military bases and facilities in Jordan — a country Iran accused of enabling American military operations against it. Separately, Iranian forces also struck a number of U.S. vessels, actions the ministry labeled "defensive strikes."

Iranian officials reiterated their resolve to protect the country's sovereignty and interests, cautioning that any further military strikes against Iran would be met with a forceful response. The ministry additionally urged the UN Security Council and other international bodies to intervene immediately to stop what it described as ongoing U.S. violations of global peace and security.

The exchange marks the latest flashpoint in the broader U.S.-Iran confrontation, which has increasingly spilled into critical shipping lanes near the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, with each side now claiming strikes on both military and commercial targets.

Earlier in the day, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had struck two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers — a response, it said, to earlier American strikes on five Iranian oil tankers.
