Bangladesh, Hong Kong Sign Investment Protection Deal To Boost FDI Prospects

(MENAFN- Bangladesh Monitor) Dhaka: Bangladesh and Hong Kong have signed an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) aimed at promoting bilateral investment and strengthening protection for investors and their capital.

The agreement was signed today at the opening session of the 11th Belt and Road Summit 2026 in Hong Kong, read a commerce ministry press release.

Bangladesh's Minister for Industries, Commerce, and Textiles and Jute Khandaker Abdul Muktadir signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau signed on behalf of the Hong Kong government.

The agreement is expected to strengthen safeguards for investors from both sides while creating a more institutionalised investment environment and opening up new avenues for economic cooperation.

Hong Kong is currently Bangladesh's seventh-largest source of foreign investment. The new agreement could help attract greater investment from Hong Kong, particularly in promising sectors such as readymade garments and textiles.

Bangladesh has attracted around $750 million in foreign direct investment (FDI) from Hong Kong over the past five years, including $122 million in 2025 alone.
