Yemeni Forces Seize Two Areas From Houthis in Taiz Offensive

(MENAFN) Yemeni government troops have seized control of two areas in western Taiz province after clashing with Houthi fighters, an army commander said Tuesday, as fighting intensifies across multiple fronts.

Abdul Aziz Al-Majidi, chief of staff of the Taiz military axis, said in footage reviewed by a correspondent that “the armed forces in the Taiz axis launched an offensive on the Al-Kadha front in western Taiz province.”

"The armed forces managed to establish control over the Al-Mukazama and Al-Mihal areas on the same front,” he added, without providing details.

Separately, the Yemeni Armed Forces Media Center reported that “warplanes targeted a gathering and a command center belonging to the Houthi militia on the Jabal Habashi front west of Taiz city,” offering no further elaboration.

The Houthis have not responded to either statement.

The offensive comes amid a broader surge in fighting between government forces and the Iran-backed Houthis, with clashes intensifying over recent days across the Taiz, Al-Jawf and Al-Bayda provinces, accompanied by airstrikes on Houthi-held positions.

The escalation marks a sharp departure from the relative calm Yemen has experienced since April 2022, when a truce brought a pause to nearly 12 years of war pitting government forces — backed by a Saudi-led military coalition — against the Houthis, who overran the capital, Sanaa, and swaths of the country back in 2014.

Since the Gaza war erupted in late 2023, the Houthis have widened their reach into regional conflict, striking Israeli targets and commercial vessels in the Red Sea. The latest wave of ground fighting has stoked concerns that Yemen could be sliding back toward all-out war.
