Israeli Rights Groups Welcome UK Settlement Trade Ban
(MENAFN) Two Israeli human rights organizations have welcomed the UK’s decision to prohibit imports produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, while urging other countries to take stronger measures against Israel’s settlement policies.
B’Tselem said the UK’s recognition of ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, together with the growing willingness of governments to move beyond criticism and introduce concrete measures, could signal a broader change in the international response to Israel’s actions.
"The UK government's recognition that ethnic cleansing is taking place in the West Bank, alongside the growing move by governments from condemnation to concrete action, must mark the beginning of a broader shift in how the international community acts to stop Israel's crimes," B'Tselem said in a statement.
Yesh Din also praised the move, saying the UK and 11 other countries had taken an important step by acknowledging that Israel’s “illegal settlement enterprise” involves violence and should not receive international support.
The organization argued that settlements represent more than a source of physical violence, saying their continued existence involves the dispossession, oppression and discrimination of Palestinians.
“For years, we have witnessed and documented the expansion of settlements, the takeover of land, restrictions on movement and access to land, settler violence and state violence,” Yesh Din said.
The group added that such practices have a direct impact on Palestinian families and communities and are part of what it described as a wider, systematic effort to push Palestinians away from their homes and land.
