US Forces Destroy Iranian Tankers After Naval Attacks
(MENAFN) US forces have destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers following two attempted ballistic missile attacks by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against a US Navy warship over the past two days, according to reports.
"The U.S. warship successfully evaded the attempted Iranian attacks and continued to patrol regional waters. No American personnel were harmed," the US military said.
In a separate update, US Central Command said the Iranian tanker M/T Riesco sank in the Gulf of Oman after being struck by US forces in response to the attempted attacks by the IRGC.
Footage released by the US military showed the tanker going under water. The vessel was reported to have been destroyed on Sept. 8.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier warned that Iran would face the loss of additional tankers if it continued attempting to attack American naval vessels.
"Iran continues to try to hit US naval ships, and for every time they do that or try to do that, they're going to lose tankers. And I think you'll see that again today," Rubio told reporters during his visit to Colombia.
