UN General Assembly Opens with Call to Restore Global Trust
(MENAFN) The 81st session of the UN General Assembly begins Tuesday with a renewed appeal to strengthen confidence in multilateral cooperation, as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres describes restoring faith in the international system as "the defining challenge of our time."
General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman highlights the United Nations’ continued role over more than eight decades, arguing that its survival reflects the importance of its original mission.
"for more than eight decades, our organization has helped the world avoid plunging into a third world war, arguably the very reason for its existence."
Rahman also points to the wide range of humanitarian and peace-related activities carried out by the organization, much of which takes place away from public attention.
"every day, often far from the spotlight, the United Nations and its dedicated corps of professionals work to feed millions of people, including refugees and other displaced populations around the world, support peace and security, combat chronic diseases, and help countries address complex transboundary challenges."
At the same time, he acknowledges that the UN has fallen short in addressing several major global challenges. Ongoing conflicts, vulnerable development progress and increasingly severe climate-related effects continue to test the organization’s ability to deliver on its objectives.
"Conflicts continue to inflict immense human suffering, development gains remain feeble and fragile, climate impacts are intensifying," he said.
