Trump Blocks Canadian Products from US Federal Purchases
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has ordered the federal government to stop purchasing products made in Canada as tensions between Washington and Ottawa continue to intensify over trade.
Trump instructed the General Services Administration (GSA) to coordinate with the US Trade Representative’s office to remove Canadian-made goods from the government’s approved vendor lists, known as Multiple Award Schedules. He said the contracts covered by these schedules are valued at more than $50 billion annually.
"Everyone knows that Canada doesn't let our Great Dairy Farmers sell into the Canadian Market, and that the only reason Canada makes Autos is because of previous disastrous Trade Agreements while other Presidents were in Office," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The US president also accused Canadian federal and provincial authorities of "banned American Small Businesses and Companies from selling into their Government Procurement Markets," despite Canada having extensive access to comparable US government procurement opportunities, including at the state level.
"Canada has been ripping us off for years... That is not reciprocity, it is a Canadian Trade Scam. From now on, NO RECIPROCITY – NO ACCESS!" he said.
Trump further argued that the restrictions "should have been cut off years ago, by other Administrations," and blamed former President Joe Biden for allowing them to remain in place.
