Argentina Targets Oil Activities Near Falkland Islands
(MENAFN) Argentina has launched sanction proceedings against 15 additional individuals and companies over alleged breaches of the country’s hydrocarbon regulations involving activities on its continental shelf.
"This progress is a new step in the same direction," the government said. "The Argentine Republic does not accept nor will it accept attacks against its sovereignty."
The proceedings concern individuals and legal entities accused of participating in oil and gas operations that Argentina considers unauthorized in maritime areas surrounding the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
The latest cases are in addition to proceedings already initiated against 45 other individuals and entities under Article 2 of Law No. 26,659. The total number of parties facing action has therefore reached 60.
The move comes as offshore exploration around the Falkland Islands continues to expand. Among the projects involved is the Sea Lion development, which includes British company Rockhopper Exploration and Israel-based Navitas Petroleum.
The Argentine government said the measures reinforce its longstanding position that it holds sovereignty over the South Atlantic islands and the surrounding maritime zones.
