Cuba Rejects Colonial Rule as Trump Map Sparks Backlash
(MENAFN) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has rejected any suggestion that Cuba could once again come under foreign colonial rule, declaring that the country "will never again" become a colony of any "empire" following the publication of a US map showing the island under American colors.
"Cuba knows well the meaning of having been a colony and neocolony of two empires," Diaz-Canel wrote, while stopping short of directly mentioning the map.
"The blood that has been shed for our independence, sovereignty and self-determination will not have been in vain, and we will defend them to the last consequences," he added.
The map, published by US President Donald Trump on Monday, displays US flag colors across several countries and territories, including Mexico, Canada, Cuba, Greenland, Iceland and areas of the Caribbean and Central America.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez also responded to the image with a sarcastic warning, saying the US government would leave its citizens "geographically disoriented."
"Soon they will not know in which gulf, lake, building, country, continent or planet they are," Rodriguez wrote in a social media post.
The statements come as relations between Cuba and the United States reach one of their most strained periods in decades.
Since the start of 2026, the Trump administration has intensified its "maximum pressure" policy toward Havana. The measures include an oil blockade and secondary sanctions introduced in May, which have discouraged foreign businesses from continuing operations in Cuba.
