Iran Warns Gulf Tankers Could Face Retaliatory Attacks
(MENAFN) Iran has warned that oil tankers located at ports in Kuwait and Bahrain could face retaliatory attacks following reported US strikes on Iranian vessels, according to reports.
The warning was issued by Iran’s navy after several Iranian oil tankers were reportedly targeted in US military operations. Crews aboard tankers currently docked in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports were urged to leave their vessels immediately, as the ships could become targets.
Iran accused Kuwait and Bahrain of allowing US forces to operate from their territories and of cooperating with Washington in attacks against Iranian vessels.
The threat followed reports that a small Iranian oil tanker was struck by a US missile near Kharg Island in the Gulf. The vessel was reportedly hit close to the island’s anchorage, with no casualties reported, while its crew was evacuated.
A second Iranian oil tanker was also reportedly targeted by the US military near the southern Iranian coast close to Jask, according to reports.
The latest developments come amid growing tensions between Tehran and Washington over the Strait of Hormuz. The escalation continues despite a memorandum signed in June that outlined plans to reopen the strategically important waterway as part of a broader effort toward a peace agreement.
