Trump Hails AfD Landslide in Germany, Blames Immigration Anger

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump applauded a record electoral showing by Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party Tuesday, pointing to backlash against the country's immigration policies as the driving force behind its gains.

"Wow! The Populist Party in Germany just had a really big night," Trump declared in a Truth Social post.

"They finally got tired of the absolutely horrible Immigration rules and regulations which have hurt Germany so badly. THEY ARE ON THE RISE, and not going to take it anymore! MGGA!!!" he continued, invoking his own shorthand for "Make Germany Great Again."

Sunday's vote in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt saw the AfD claim 43.8% support — the party's strongest result in any German state election to date — while Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) dropped to 17.2%.

The party's regional branch has been formally labeled a proven right-wing extremist organization by Germany's domestic intelligence agency, which says certain factions within the AfD advance a racist, ethnicity-based concept of national identity that clashes with the country's democratic constitutional framework. Germany's mainstream political parties have repeatedly pointed to that designation as justification for refusing to enter coalition talks with the AfD.
