Merchant Ship Targeted in Hormuz Amid US-Iran Clash
(MENAFN) A commercial vessel came under threat in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, caught up in escalating military tensions gripping the critical waterway, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations center (UKMTO).
In a security bulletin, UKMTO reported that a merchant ship in the strait had been "subject to interaction as part of ongoing military activity in the region."
The bulletin stopped short of naming the vessel, disclosing whether anyone was hurt, or detailing what the encounter actually involved.
UKMTO said "Authorities are aware, and relevant investigations remain ongoing," and urged ships transiting the area to stay current on maritime security updates while remaining alert to the "evolving operational environment."
The warning followed a dramatic announcement just hours earlier from US Central Command (CENTCOM), which said American forces had struck down five Iranian crude oil tankers. The strikes came in response to twin ballistic missile attacks launched by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against a US Navy warship over the previous two days.
CENTCOM said the warship successfully dodged both attacks and remained on patrol in regional waters, with no injuries reported among American service members.
