UDST Showcases Next-Gen Sustainable Mobility Innovations
Doha, Qatar: The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) reiterated its commitment to advancing green transportation solutions by unveiling a suite of student and faculty-led innovations during the ongoing Autonomous e-Mobility Forum (AEMOB) at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC).
Speaking to The Peninsula on the sidelines, Associate Dean and Director of the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mobility (CeSMO) at UDST's College of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Raja Mazuir Shah highlighted how the university's research directly supports Qatar's environmental goals.
“CeSMO is deeply committed to developing solutions for sustainable mobility,” Prof. Shah stated, outlining several key projects on display under the Centre of Excellence.
Among the featured technologies is a Level 3 autonomous vehicle system developed by UDST students, which competed in the Shell Eco-marathon in Poland. CeSMO also showcased an electric dhow (e-dhow) designed to help decarbonise Qatar's maritime transport while boosting eco-friendly tourism ahead of the nation's 2030 sustainability targets.
Prof. Shah also presented an innovative e-scooter designed to address local road safety concerns. Equipped with an intelligent system, the vehicle actively manages hazards to minimise potential risks in urban environments.
Furthermore, the faculty and students showcased multi-purpose drone technologies engineered for applications ranging from agricultural monitoring to surveillance.
In the years ahead, CeSMO plans to expand its research beyond lithium-ion batteries into alternative energy systems, including hydrogen technology and alternative fuels, the official explained.
As Prof. Shah noted, achieving these milestones requires strategic industry collaboration. Public-private partnerships, whether fully funded or co-funded, are essential for bringing solutions to market.
“Our vision is to become a leading center in sustainable mobility, both in Qatar and globally,” Prof. Shah said. He noted that CeSMO's initiatives strictly align with local and international frameworks, including the Qatar National Vision 2030, the Third National Development Strategy (NDS3), and the Global Decarbonisation Agenda.
