Yemeni Forces Capture Houthi Commander in Taiz
(MENAFN) Yemeni forces aligned with the government announced Tuesday that they had captured a Houthi commander and several fighters during clashes in the southwestern province of Taiz.
The joint government forces said they detained Abu Ali al-Adhari, who they identified as one of the commanders of the Houthis’ rapid intervention units operating on the Al-Barh front.
Al-Adhari "was captured along with several of his men following fierce clashes," according to the statement.
The forces also reported conducting airstrikes against Houthi reinforcements in western Taiz, saying the strikes "struck Houthi militia reinforcements in the Al-Kadha and Al-Barh sectors in western Taiz."
The Houthis have not issued an immediate response to the claims.
Yemen had experienced a relative reduction in fighting since 2022 following years of conflict between government forces, supported by a Saudi-led coalition, and the Iranian-backed Houthis. The group took control of the capital, Sana'a, along with large areas of the country in 2014.
Regional tensions involving the Houthis have increased since late 2023 following the outbreak of the Gaza war. The group has launched attacks against Israel and commercial vessels operating in the Red Sea, while the latest escalation inside Yemen has renewed concerns that the country could slide back into a broader conflict.
