Ceuta Leader Calls for Stronger EU Action on Migration Pressure
(MENAFN) The president of Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, Juan Jesus Vivas, calls on the European Union to take stronger measures to protect the territory’s borders and help it cope with the impact of large-scale migrant arrivals.
Vivas also proposes granting Ceuta and neighboring Melilla a special status within the EU, arguing that their unique geographic position exposes them to pressures not faced by other European territories.
Speaking alongside Javier Zarzalejos, chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE), Vivas says the influx of migrants has placed exceptional strain on Ceuta’s public services, economy and social stability.
"Ceuta is currently a pressure cooker which can explode at any minute," said Vivas, describing the situation as "unsustainable."
He calls for a stronger European presence along the Spanish-Moroccan border, including greater involvement from Frontex and the European Union Agency for Asylum.
Vivas also urges EU institutions to provide financial support for infrastructure projects designed to strengthen border controls and help Ceuta manage the consequences of large migrant crossings.
He says Ceuta and Melilla require special consideration because they are the EU’s only territories with land borders directly connecting the bloc to Africa.
