Belgium Welcomes New Trade Restrictions on Israeli Settlements
(MENAFN) Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot welcomes plans by France, the UK, Canada and other countries to impose restrictions on trade involving goods from Israeli settlements, describing the move as an “important step.”
“The decision taken today by several countries including the UK, France and Canada, to join the group of countries who, like Belgium, have taken action against the settlement policy of Israel is an important step,” Prevot wrote on X.
“The international community has indeed to react with concrete measures when international law is violated,” he said. “I commend the efforts of my colleagues.”
Prevot calls on Israel to halt the expansion of settlements across the occupied West Bank, referring to a joint statement by national leaders that Belgium signed on Aug. 20.
“We will continue to act in its interest,” he said, referring to efforts toward a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace for the Israelis and the Palestinians based on the two-state solution.”
France, the UK, Canada, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Sweden say they plan to adopt national restrictions on trade involving goods produced in Israeli settlements, which are considered illegal under international law.
