Jordan Shoots Down 18 Iranian Missiles in Overnight Barrage
(MENAFN) Jordan's military said early Wednesday it had shot down 18 ballistic missiles fired from Iranian territory, thwarting the bulk of an overnight barrage aimed at the kingdom.
A spokesperson for the armed forces said 20 missiles in total crossed into Jordanian airspace: 18 were intercepted and destroyed, while two came down in unpopulated areas, according to a state-run news agency.
No casualties resulted from the strikes, the military said, noting that specialized units were already at work clearing debris and shrapnel from the affected sites.
Officials urged residents to steer clear of any unfamiliar objects on the ground and to alert authorities immediately rather than approach them.
The armed forces said they remain on maximum alert, with radar, early-warning, and air-defense networks fully engaged to safeguard the country's airspace and sovereignty.
The barrage followed an earlier claim from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which said it had struck a US military installation in Jordan with ballistic missiles and vowed further retaliatory strikes would continue "until US aggression ends."
The exchange came just hours after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American forces had destroyed five Iranian crude-oil tankers, a response to two separate IRGC missile attacks on a US Navy warship over the preceding 48 hours. The vessel evaded both strikes and remained on patrol in regional waters, with CENTCOM confirming no US personnel were harmed.
