Pappas, Sununu Win NH Senate Primaries, Setting Up Fall Showdown
(MENAFN) New Hampshire voters went to the polls Tuesday to pick their party's standard-bearers for a US Senate seat that could help decide which party controls the chamber come January.
Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas cruised past four rivals, capturing 64.9% of the vote with three-quarters of precincts reporting. He'll take on Republican former Sen. John E. Sununu, who dispatched seven challengers of his own, pulling in 68.4% support with 68% of ballots tallied.
The general-election matchup is being closely watched nationally, as it's among several contests that could tip the balance of power in the US Senate this fall. Republicans currently hold a slim 53-45 edge, with two independents rounding out the chamber. The seat up for grabs belongs to three-term Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who is not seeking reelection.
Meanwhile, the fight to succeed Pappas in the state's 1st Congressional District remains unsettled on the Democratic side. Stefany Shaheen — the retiring senator's eldest daughter — is locked in a tight contest with Maura Sullivan, a former Obama administration official, with 82% of votes counted and no winner declared.
Republicans in that same district have already settled on their nominee: Anthony DiLorenzo secured the GOP nod with 51.6% support as 76% of precincts reported results.
Elsewhere on the ballot, Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte cleared her three primary opponents with ease, taking 91.4% of the vote with 68% of precincts counted. She now heads to the general election against Democrat Cinde Warmington, who ran unopposed for her party's nomination.
