Israeli Lawmaker Welcomes Western Sanctions on Settlements
(MENAFN) Israeli Knesset member Ofer Cassif welcomes new trade restrictions and sanctions targeting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, saying stronger international pressure is needed to push Israel toward ending its occupation.
“I salute the governments that, at last, understood that sanctions are needed to be imposed on Israel to stop state sponsored terror in the occupied West Bank and move toward ending the criminal occupation, which is the common interest of both Palestinians and Israelis,” Cassif told Anadolu.
“It is indeed too late and too little, but better than never,” added Cassif, who represents the left-wing Hadash-Ta’al coalition in the Israeli parliament.
His remarks follow announcements by Britain, France and Canada that they will prohibit imports originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. A total of 12 countries support coordinated measures aimed at addressing settlement expansion and violence by settlers.
Britain also unveils a broader set of measures, including sanctions against people accused of involvement in settler violence and restrictions on services that contribute to settlement activities.
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband says the measures are intended to challenge the continued expansion of settlements and help preserve the possibility of establishing a future Palestinian state.
