Trump Bans Canadian Dairy, Alcohol, Vehicles in Trade Crackdown
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump signed a series of proclamations Tuesday blocking specific Canadian dairy products, alcoholic beverages and motor vehicles from entering the United States, according to information posted on the White House's website.
The prohibitions take effect Sept. 29. A separate set of proclamations, adjusting which Canadian motor vehicle and alcohol products fall under the existing 50% tariff rate, kicks in earlier — Sept. 15. Goods already shipped to the US but not yet cleared for consumption before the ban date will continue facing the standing 50% duty.
A senior administration official, speaking to reporters on background, said the crackdown was a direct response to new tariffs Canada recently placed on US steel, appliances and dairy exports.
"We are banning a number of types of products. These include dairy products. These include most alcoholic products ... and we banned the import of motor vehicles from Canada," the official said, adding that the goal was to "keep a level playing field, deter retaliation, and of course protect American production."
According to the official, the administration simultaneously eased tariffs on select goods originally targeted in a July 20 action — cement among them — while expanding the list to capture new categories, including trade vehicles, certain cheeses and motorboats.
In a related move, Trump instructed the US Trade Representative and the General Services Administration (GSA) to strip Canadian-origin products from the GSA's federal procurement schedule. The official described that effort as "in progress."
