US Targets Iran Aviation Sector with New Sanctions
(MENAFN) The United States imposes sanctions on 36 targets connected to Iran’s aviation industry, including 27 airlines, accusing them of supporting the transportation of weapons, personnel and prohibited cargo.
The measures are introduced as part of Washington’s “Operation Economic Outcast” and target Iran’s remaining operational airlines, along with companies and intermediaries allegedly assisting Tehran in obtaining US-made aircraft and aviation-related technology.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the new restrictions aim to disrupt financial channels that support the Iranian government. He also warns businesses dealing with sanctioned Iranian airlines that they risk losing access to the international financial system.
The Treasury says the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is additionally imposing measures on companies based outside Iran that are involved in activities supporting the country’s sanctioned aviation operations.
In a separate move, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issues an alert to financial institutions, calling on them to monitor and report suspicious transactions associated with Iran’s efforts to obtain commercial aircraft and aircraft components.
