Russia Says It Seeks to Preserve Ties with Germany

(MENAFN) Russia says it has never advocated cutting diplomatic relations with Germany, although the Kremlin acknowledges that it cannot predict how far the German leadership may take its current policies.

"We have never been supporters of the reduction of relations," Peskov said. "How far the leadership of Germany can go, I wouldn't even predict something here now.”

Speaking at a press briefing, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also criticizes German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, accusing him of harming his own country by attributing Germany’s difficulties to Russia. He points to what he describes as a deterioration in living standards among German citizens.

“This is an inexplicable, irrational, non-truth-oriented behavior of the head of the state, who by his actions causes significant damage to his state,” he said. “We can see this from the German economy's loss of its competitiveness, from the decline in the standard of living of Germans."

Relations between Moscow and Berlin have deteriorated further following Germany’s accusation that Russia was behind a drone attack at Leipzig Airport last month. Germany subsequently ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and ended the agreement governing the Russian House in Berlin.

Moscow denies any involvement in the incident and responds with its own diplomatic measures, including the closure of Germany’s consulate and Goethe Institut in St. Petersburg.
