Guterres Calls for Renewed Global Commitment to Peace
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls for stronger efforts toward peace and international cooperation as conflicts continue, global temperatures increase and respect for human rights faces mounting challenges.
Guterres makes the appeal during a wreath-laying ceremony commemorating the 65th anniversary of the death of former UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold. He says the principles represented by his predecessor continue to offer guidance amid today’s increasingly unstable international environment.
“We mark Hammarskjold’s death at a time when global cooperation is under siege, wars are raging, temperatures are rising, and human rights are being trampled,” Guterres said.
Hammarskjold dies in 1961 after his aircraft crashes while he is traveling on a peace mission aimed at negotiating a ceasefire in Katanga, a region of the Congo.
Guterres says he has received the latest findings from former Tanzanian Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman concerning the investigation into the crash. He adds that his recommendations will soon be submitted to the UN General Assembly.
The UN chief also calls on member states and other relevant parties to release any documents that could help establish the circumstances surrounding the crash. He says the families of those who died, the United Nations and the international community “deserve answers.”
