Israeli Opposition Nears Majority as Netanyahu Bloc Loses Ground
(MENAFN) Israel’s opposition parties could be close to securing enough seats to form a government if a new political group led by Yoaz Hendel joins their coalition, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc is projected to fall to 47 seats, according to a new poll.
The survey forecasts 57 seats for the existing opposition parties, while a new party led by Hendel and economist Yaron Zelekha is expected to win four seats.
Should the Hendel-Zelekha party align itself with the opposition, the bloc would reach 61 seats, exactly the number required to secure a parliamentary majority in Israel’s 120-seat Knesset.
Neither Hendel nor Zelekha has said which political camp their party would back if it succeeds in entering parliament.
Netanyahu’s bloc loses support in the latest projection after the far-right Amcha Yisrael party, headed by Ofer Winter, fails to secure any seats.
The poll places Yashar, led by Gadi Eisenkot, at the top with 25 seats, making it the largest party in the Knesset. Naftali Bennett’s Together party is projected to receive 13 seats, while Yair Golan’s Democrats are expected to take 10 and Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu nine.
Combined, these four opposition parties would control 57 seats, leaving them four seats short of a parliamentary majority without support from the new Hendel-Zelekha party.
