France Sees Groundwater Levels Decline Amid Persistent Dry Conditions
(MENAFN) Groundwater resources across France continue to deteriorate, with 61% of monitoring sites recording levels below their seasonal averages as of Sept. 1, while levels declined at 90% of monitored locations during August, according to the French Geological Survey (BRGM).
“The situation of groundwater remains largely degraded due to the lack of effective rainfall in August and continued high water demand for various uses,” said BRGM.
The proportion of monitoring sites reporting below-average groundwater levels has increased compared with the same period last year, when 44% of locations were below their monthly seasonal averages.
Only 8% of monitoring points recorded stable levels in August, while groundwater increased at 2%. The overall deterioration was also more significant than that observed during August 2025.
BRGM linked the ongoing decline to insufficient effective rainfall since May, increasingly severe drought conditions and elevated temperatures from June onward. Heavy demand for water during the summer months also contributed to the worsening situation.
By the end of August, 39% of monitoring locations had groundwater levels considered satisfactory, meaning they were either close to or slightly above their normal seasonal averages.
The most severe shortages were reported in the Limousin bedrock aquifers, Jura limestone aquifers and the northern Alsace plain, where groundwater conditions remained particularly weak.
