Iran Says It Shoots Down US Drone Over Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Iran says its air defense forces have brought down a US MQ-1 drone while it was flying over the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports.
The unmanned aircraft was reportedly detected by Iranian military air defense units deployed in the southeastern part of the country as it operated over the strategically important waterway. Iranian defense systems then tracked the drone through the country’s integrated air defense network before engaging and destroying it.
According to reports, Iran used locally developed air defense technology to intercept the aircraft. Iranian authorities are expected to provide additional information about the incident at a later stage.
Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says its naval forces captured a US unmanned submarine near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz early Tuesday, according to a statement broadcast by Iranian state media.
The United States has not immediately issued a response to either reported incident.
The developments occur as tensions between Tehran and Washington continue to rise over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital maritime passage where the two sides remain in dispute over navigation and access.
