Russia, North Korea Strengthen Ties with Tumen River Bridge

(MENAFN) Russia and North Korea have opened their first road bridge spanning the Tumen River along their shared border, allowing vehicles to begin crossing between the two countries.

Speaking through a video link during the opening ceremony, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said the border crossing was constructed in “record time” and designed to handle increasing passenger traffic. The facility is capable of accommodating as many as 300 vehicles each day.

“I am pleased to welcome everyone to the ceremony marking the completion of the modern bridge across the Tumen river and the launch of the first automobile route, which will further strengthen ties between our friendly countries,” Mishustin said.

The Russian prime minister explained that the road leading to the bridge is connected to the Ussuri federal highway, which forms part of the West-East international transport corridor extending between St. Petersburg and Vladivostok.

“Relations between Russia and the North Korea are today at an unprecedented level of comprehensive strategic partnership,” he said. “Our countries actively cooperate in virtually all areas and coordinate efforts to ensure regional security and stability.”

North Korean Prime Minister Pak Thae-song said the bridge was constructed in only 495 days, describing it as "a monumental structure embodying traditional Russian-Korean friendship."

"The governments of the two countries, the North Korea and Russia, will build on the valuable successes and experiences achieved during the construction of the Tumen river bridge to achieve further practical results in cooperation that meets the hopes and aspirations of the peoples of both countries, who are striving for joint development and prosperity," he said.
