Tunisia's Assumption Of The Chairmanship Of The Council Of The League Of Arab States At The Ministerial Level

Mr. Mohamed Ali Nafti, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, chaired today, 7 September 2026, the proceedings of the 166th Session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the Ministerial Level.

At the outset of his address, the Minister reviewed the main issues and challenges facing the Arab region, stressing that Tunisia's assumption of the Chairmanship of the Council at the Ministerial Level, at this critical juncture, represents a national responsibility that Tunisia is committed to using to strengthen Arab solidarity, bridge differences, unify positions and advance joint Arab action towards greater effectiveness.

In this regard, he affirmed that security and stability cannot be achieved in the region unless the Palestinian people are able to recover all their legitimate rights. He reaffirmed Tunisia's steadfast position, under the guidance of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Kaïs Saïed, in standing by the Palestinian people and supporting their struggle to fully recover their rights, which are firmly established and imprescriptible, foremost among them their right to establish their independent and sovereign State on the entire territory of Palestine, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

Mr. Mohamed Ali Nafti also condemned the attacks targeting Syrian and Lebanese territories, expressing Tunisia's full solidarity with the brotherly Syrian and Lebanese peoples and stressing the need to respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of both countries. In the same context, he reaffirmed Tunisia's commitment to a Libyan-Libyan solution that guarantees Libya's territorial unity, as well as its solidarity with the brotherly peoples of Sudan and Yemen in their persistent efforts to preserve their unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He further expressed support for efforts aiming at overcoming the crises facing both countries, in a manner that responds to the aspirations of their peoples for security, stability and development.

The Minister also expressed Tunisia's full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the State of Qatar, the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Sultanate of Oman, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Republic of Iraq in confronting attacks and violations targeting their sovereignty, security, stability and territorial integrity. He reaffirmed Tunisia's categorical rejection of all forms of aggression and escalation, as well as its adherence to the principles of good-neighbourliness, respect for the sovereignty of States and non-interference in their internal affairs, in a manner that safeguards the security and stability of the region.

He called for enhanced coordination and consultation among Arab States to address security challenges and risks, as well as for the development of monitoring and early-warning mechanisms, thereby strengthening the collective capacity to prevent crises and respond to them in a timely manner. He also stressed the importance of a shared commitment to implementing approved Arab decisions and strategies, while developing mechanisms to translate them into concrete programmes and projects that respond to the aspirations of the Arab peoples.

With regard to development, social and economic fields, Minister Nafti highlighted Tunisia's active engagement in implementing Arab strategies and projects, recalling that Tunisia hosted, towards the end of 2025, the Arab High-Level Preparatory Meeting for the Second World Summit for Social Development, while assuming, as of the same period, the Chairmanship of the Economic and Social Council of the League of Arab States.

He also noted that Tunisia received, on 4 December 2025, the Arab Government Excellence Award in the field of education for its pioneering project,“An Integrated School Life System”, in recognition of national efforts to develop the education system and enhance the quality of school life. In the same context, he highlighted Tunisia's assumption, since 2026, of the Chairmanship of the Higher Authority of the Arab Board of Health Specializations, further strengthening its contribution to Arab cooperation in the health sector and the exchange of expertise and competencies.

The Minister further underscored the importance of Tunisia's selection as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2027, describing it as an achievement that reflects the standing enjoyed by Tunisia within the Arab space, as well as its rich material and longstanding cultural heritage. He stressed that this designation opens new prospects for strengthening tourism and cultural cooperation and exchanges among Arab States and peoples.

At the conclusion of his address, the Minister reaffirmed Tunisia's determination to continue making an active contribution, in cooperation with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and its Member States, to activating and further developing mechanisms for joint Arab action, in a manner that strengthens the League's ability to fulfil its role, respond to challenges, and serve the interests and aspirations of the Arab peoples.

For their part, the Arab delegations participating in the meeting expressed their appreciation for Tunisia and commended the role it plays in supporting joint Arab action. They renewed their confidence in Tunisia's Chairmanship of the Council at the Ministerial Level, expressing their hope that this Chairmanship would contribute to advancing dialogue and consultation, bridging differences and strengthening Arab unity.

On the sidelines of the Session, the Minister held meetings with a number of his Arab counterparts to discuss bilateral relations, ways to further develop cooperation and its mechanisms, as well as preparations for forthcoming bilateral entitlements
