WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (NNN-Anadolu) -- US President Donald Trump signed a series of proclamations Tuesday barring certain Canadian dairy, alcoholic beverage and motor vehicle products from being imported into the US, according to the White House's website, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

The bans take effect on Sept. 29, while separate proclamations modifying the scope of products subject to existing 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian motor vehicles and alcoholic beverages take effect on Sept. 15. Products already imported but not yet entered for consumption before the bans take effect will remain subject to the existing 50 per cent duty rate.

A senior administration official, briefing reporters on background, said the measures came in response to fresh tariffs that Canada imposed on US steel, appliances and dairy products.

"We are banning a number of types of products. These include dairy products. These include most alcoholic products... and we banned the import of motor vehicles from Canada," the official said, adding the measures were meant to "keep a level playing field, deter retaliation, and of course protect American production."

The official said the administration also removed some products from tariffs first imposed on July 20, including cement, while adding others such as trade vehicles, certain cheeses and motorboats.

Trump separately directed the US Trade Representative and the General Services Administration (GSA) to remove Canadian-origin goods from the GSA's procurement schedule, the official said, describing that work as "in progress."
