Japan Gov't To Boost Support For Stranded Commuters After Heavy Rain
TOKYO, Sept 9 (NNN-Kyodo) -- The government will boost support to help people stranded by heavy rain, following recent natural disasters including record downpours that hit central Japan, the chief Cabinet secretary said Wednesday, Kyodo News reported.
The remarks by top government spokesman Minoru Kihara came as Japan has increasingly focused on the issue of people stranded and unable to return home by train or other means following disasters, particularly after the devastating March 2011 earthquake.
"Several cases have occurred in which people were left stranded, including after the heavy rain" in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, Kihara said, adding, "We will study how future measures should be implemented based on the lessons learned."
With many parts of Japan recently lashed by heavy rain, Kihara emphasised that the public and private sectors will continue working together to secure facilities to accommodate stranded commuters.
