Bayeux Tapestry Debuts At British Museum For £1.2 Million
The exhibition, on view from September 10, 2026, through July 11, 2027, is the most expensive in the institution's history. Transport costs alone amounted to £1.2 million ($1.6 million), funded by a £5 million ($6.7 million) pledge from the main sponsor, WorldQuant CEO Igor Tulchinsky.
Tickets for the exhibition are being released in three tranches, with the first batch generating £2.5 million ($3.3 million) in sales. The initial release sold out within hours, causing the museum's website to crash due to high demand. Nicholas Cullinan, director of the British Museum, informed the Financial Times last week that he anticipates the exhibition will turn a profit.
Visitors are allocated 40-minute viewing slots to experience the tapestry, which is displayed in a luminous glass showcase within a narrow, darkened hall. Projections on the far wall provide context for the complex narrative, beginning with Harold's trip to Normandy in 1064. Sound effects such as lapping waves, crackling fire, and galloping hooves accompany the visual display.
The embroidery, likely commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux and possibly stitched by Anglo-Saxon nuns, offers secular insights into medieval life, including scenes of a Norman feast in Pevensey. The next ticket release for dates between January 1 and March 31, 2027, is scheduled for October 21.
