MOSCOW, Sept 8 (NNN-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- French President Emmanuel Macron has asked European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to draft a pan-European law banning access to social media for those under 15, according to Agence France-Presse, citing a letter from the French leader, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

In particular, Macron called for the“protection of all children in the European Union” and said he was counting on the“expertise and active participation” of the European Commission's services, the report said on Monday.

“The situation requires urgent action,” Macron reportedly noted in the letter.

According to the French president, age verification should be based on a combination of robust national and European solutions that ensure compliance with privacy protection standards.

In addition, Macron proposes that future European legislation clearly define and regulate addictive features of social media, as well as introduce safety standards from the outset, including limits on platform use.

In mid-August, the French Constitutional Council ruled Macron's proposed ban on social media for children under 15 was inconsistent with EU law.

Macron nevertheless intends to ensure the law is adopted by spring 2027.
