Zachry Construction To Deliver Critical Airfield Improvements At GSP And RDU
RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 08, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Zachry Construction Corporation will deliver airfield infrastructure improvements at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) in South Carolina and Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina, supporting the reliability, capacity and long-term performance of two important Southeast aviation hubs.
These projects include airfield paving, pavement rehabilitation, lighting and related improvements within active airport environments, where careful sequencing and coordination are critical to maintaining safe and efficient operations.
At Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District selected Zachry as prime contractor for the Taxilane 2 Widening Phase 1 and South General Aviation Apron Reconstruction project.
The work will widen the southern portion of Taxilane 2, reconstruct the South General Aviation Apron with new portland cement concrete pavement, rehabilitate existing asphalt taxilane pavement and install new taxiway edge lighting. The improvements are designed to expand aircraft parking and maneuvering capacity, improve pavement reliability and reduce long-term maintenance needs as GSP accommodates continued growth in general aviation, corporate aviation, cargo and airport-related business activity.
“Airfield construction requires more than delivering physical improvements. It demands careful coordination and sequencing to complete the work safely while supporting ongoing airport operations, concrete paving, pavement rehabilitation and airfield lighting,” said Nathan Burgei, project manager for Zachry Construction Corporation.“Our team will focus on carefully sequencing the work and delivering durable improvements while helping maintain safe and efficient operations at GSP.”
At RDU, Zachry was selected by Balfour Beatty to perform $5.26 million in preservation work on Runway 5L-23R. The project was awarded March 17, 2026, with work scheduled in fall 2026.
“Zachry has been delivering aviation infrastructure for more than five decades, and that experience informs how we approach complex work in active airport environments,” said Kevin Allen, vice president and Southeast regional manager for Zachry Construction Corporation.“At RDU, we're drawing on that depth of experience to execute critical runway preservation work with the coordination, sequencing and attention to detail needed to support ongoing operations and the long-term reliability of the airfield.”
Zachry's scope includes rapid reconstruction panel replacement, partial-depth concrete repairs, associated taxiway pavement repairs, airfield lighting work and related airfield safety and operational coordination.
Together, the GSP and RDU projects reflect the breadth of Zachry Construction's aviation infrastructure experience and its ability to sequence complex work, maintain airport access, minimize operational disruption and deliver durable infrastructure that supports long-term aviation growth.
Other Southeast aviation projects include apron expansion at Harnett Jetport and multiple projects at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Asheville Regional Airport.
Zachry Construction's aviation experience spans more than five decades and includes airfield infrastructure work across Texas and the Southeast. Over that time, the company has developed capabilities across airfield concrete paving and pavement rehabilitation; runway, taxiway and apron construction; aircraft parking improvements; airfield lighting; storm drainage; electrical duct banks; and roadway, bridge and concrete vehicle service road construction. This long-standing aviation portfolio reflects the technical depth and field expertise Zachry brings airfield infrastructure projects of varying scale and complexity.
