Spain Intercepts Cocaine Shipment Concealed Beneath Coconut Cargo

(MENAFN) Spanish authorities have confiscated more than 1.2 tons of cocaine concealed inside a shipment of coconuts in Seville province, southern Spain, police announced Tuesday.

Officers discovered 1,238 kilograms (2,729 pounds) of the drug hidden toward the rear of a truck trailer and underneath pallets loaded with coconuts. Two individuals were arrested on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking.

The investigation began in December after authorities identified a company in Dos Hermanas, Seville, that was allegedly being used as part of a drug-importation operation.

Investigators subsequently detected a suspicious shipping container and placed it under surveillance. Police intervened when the driver was about to transport the shipment to a warehouse, seizing the cargo as it arrived at the facility.

Searches conducted at two properties in Seville province also uncovered cash and electronic equipment that investigators considered potentially important evidence.

The investigation is still underway, and police said additional arrests could follow.

Spain remains a major gateway for cocaine entering the European Union, particularly through shipments originating in Latin America.

Spanish authorities confiscated 124 tons of cocaine in 2024, representing 37% of the total amount seized across the EU that year, according to the European Union Drugs Agency.

Spain, France and Belgium collectively accounted for 67% of the 330 tons of cocaine seized throughout the bloc in 2024.

Although the overall volume confiscated decreased compared with the previous year, the number of individual seizures rose. The EU agency attributed the trend partly to criminal organizations increasingly dividing large consignments into smaller shipments to reduce the chances of detection.
